She could hardly remember washing up on the soggy ground. She could hardly remember the current tossing her about, or the jolt and pain of her slender frame smashing against rocks and trees. She could hardly remember feeling helpless against the water's pull, struggling to stay afloat and gasping desperately for air.

But she could remember Yuaei.

She could remember the she-wolf's paws on her back as she climbed to safety. She could remember hearing the flood's roar, but refusing to focus on anything that wasn't her dear friend. She could remember being swept away, losing all sense of direction and clarity aside from one thing.

Yuaei would survive.

And what could matter more?
